What it costs to put materials in a child's hands
We want donors to see where money goes. These are our own estimates of the cost of materials alone, per child, for a group of 10 children. They are not prices, they are not what a school or family pays, and they are not comparable with the amounts above, which pay for a child's whole place in a program.
Estimated · materials only
$50Materials for one child
Covers the estimated materials for one child's first after-school term: a share of the reusable kit plus that term's consumables, $49.36 in all, estimated for a group of 10 children. Estimated, materials only; it does not include staff, the room or devices.
How the estimate is made up
Estimated materials cost, materials only
After-school program, per term
Per child, for one term of weekly sessions; costed before the published session lengths were set, so it may change.
- Facilitator kit, bought once, year one share
- $43.24 per child (estimated, materials only)
- Consumables and printing, every term
- $6.12 per child per term (estimated, materials only)
Estimated materials cost, materials only
Summer camp, for a whole summer
Per child, for a full five-week summer; the range depends on which weekly topics a site chooses. These figures cover all five weeks together: they are per summer, not per week.
- Summer kit, bought once, year one share
- $57.09 per child for the whole summer (estimated, materials only)
- Consumables, printing and building supplies, every summer
- $23.42 to $25.83 per child for the whole five-week summer, not per week (estimated, materials only)
What these estimates leave out: staff pay, the room, laptops and Wi-Fi, and any software subscription. They count only the things children and facilitators handle: play money and coins, card decks, whiteboards, headphones, folders, worksheets and certificates.
How firm they are: they are planning estimates built from typical retail prices for each item. No supplier has quoted them yet, so real costs will differ.
The buy-once kit is reused term after term, so after the first year the cost per child falls to the recurring figure plus an allowance for wear.
